About Turkey

A transcontinental nation at the crossroads of Europe and Asia

Overview of Turkey

Türkiye (Turkey) is a transcontinental country uniquely positioned at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, bridging two continents both geographically and culturally. With a population of approximately 85 million people, Turkey is one of the world's great nations – a land of extraordinary diversity, from the cosmopolitan metropolis of Istanbul to the volcanic landscapes of Cappadocia, from the Aegean olive groves to the snow-capped Eastern peaks.

Turkey's cultural heritage spans millennia of civilizations – Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman – each leaving indelible marks on the landscape, architecture, cuisine, and traditions that define modern Turkish identity. Istanbul, the cultural and economic capital straddling Europe and Asia, is home to iconic monuments including the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Topkapi Palace. Ankara serves as the political capital of the Republic.

Modern Turkey is a dynamic, rapidly developing nation that combines a rich historical legacy with forward-looking ambition. The country is a member of NATO, a candidate for EU membership, and an active participant in international scientific and cultural exchange – making it a natural home for a European congress of this significance.

100th Anniversary of the Turkish Republic

The ESH 2023 Congress carries special historical significance: 2023 marks the centennial anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 29, 1923. This milestone – known in Turkey as the "Cumhuriyet'in 100. Yılı" (100th Year of the Republic) – is being celebrated throughout Turkey with national pride and international recognition.

The closing day of the ESH 2023 Congress, Sunday October 29, coincides precisely with Republic Day – Turkey's most important national holiday. The congress organizing committee regards this remarkable coincidence as deeply meaningful, and warmly invites international participants to share in this historic centennial celebration.

"We look forward to celebrating the 100th anniversary of our Republic together with our international guests."
— ESH 2023 Organizing Committee

Turkish Cuisine

Turkish cuisine is widely regarded as one of the world's great culinary traditions – a rich tapestry woven from Central Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Balkan influences developed over centuries of Ottoman imperial cooking. Congress participants will have ample opportunity to experience this magnificent food culture during the Welcome Reception, Gala Dinner, Congress Tour dinner, and at the hotel's multiple restaurants.
